George David Marshall served as a Gunners Mate in the US Navy during World War II. He spent most of his time aboard the heavy cruiser USS Salt Lake City (CA-25) although he also served on the USS San Onofre (ARD-30) which was a floating dry dock.
On December 7, 1941, the USS Salt Lake City was steaming toward Pearl Harbor when they received word of the Japanese attack. The Salt Lake City was only 200 miles west of Pearl Harbor and it arrived in the harbor less than a day after the attack.
Thanks to NAVSOURSE for the photos. It's a great web site if you are looking for information on a Navy ship.
